Grade 6 students and teachers have hit our last full day at camp and we’re spending it hiking through the forest! It has been an incredible week in so many ways.
We started off our day with a great breakfast. Kids enjoyed eggs, hash browns, cereal, yogurt and fruit to fill their little tummies for their big hike. All OHS teepee groups headed off into the forest with hike maps in hand ready to explore. Groups will follow “Lookout Trail” and “Hector Trail” exploring the natural environment around them. Spots such as “Dragonfly Meadow”, the “Outcroppings” and the “Old Well” can be interesting highlights during their day. Students will further their knowledge of the “tress and forests” curriculum and use real paper maps to locate themselves and choose their routes. No Google Maps to help us out! The weather couldn’t be better for the day. There’s a little smoke haze from the forest fires up north, but students have been just fine. Tonight, after dinner and “OHS teacher time” activities, instead of campfire, all groups will gather together in Hector Lodge for an exciting challenge game. All teepee groups will compete in a racing scavenger hunt style game that is action packed. Imagine a few hundred Grade 6’s all screaming and cheering their team mates on as they race out and around Hector Lodge to complete the challenge! After a day spent outdoors hiking and an evening of fun filled action they will be ready for their last night sleeping in their teepees. The counsellors and staff here at Camp Chief Hector have been amazing. This is such a well-organized and child centered program that incorporates core values and life skills that students will carry with them for a lifetime. This is such a valuable experience for our students and we appreciate all the efforts parents put in beforehand preparing their children for a successful week. Tomorrow students will enjoy their last day playing the exploration game “Forts and Furs”. Students will further their knowledge of the settlement and exploration of Canada by competing to “hunt”, trade and communicate with the important “characters” of early Canada. Imagine trying to barter and trade with a grouchy old French fur trader, but you don’t speak the language! Or run into enemy territory to find furs! Watch out for the RCMP who will often find illegal goods students have unknowingly purchased from the illegal traders! It’s so much fun for the students and they’re learning at the same time! After lunch at 11:30am, buses will load up and we usually leave camp around 12:30pm. We will text the school when the buses pull out so they can send out a messenger email with more accurate times. Thank you for your patience waiting for our arrival. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 ~ Outdoor SchoolWe are well underway at Camp! Day 2 has begun! Incredible weather and the kids are having a blast. Students are still excited and are having a super fun time!
Due to scheduling changes, we were the only school to arrive on Monday. This gave us devoted attention from lots of staff and counsellors and allowed for our own special day at Camp Chief Hector with Olympic Heights. When we first arrived at Camp, we played a welcome game while counsellors loaded the bus. This gave the students opportunity to run around, make a lot of noise, and familiarize themselves with the beautiful scenery and environment. We went over camp rules and expectations around the bonfire and were organized into our tipi groups right away. We trekked out to our tipis with all of our luggage (boy, was this heavy!) and got used to "tipi life" (spiders... lots of spiders). We survived our first home cooked meal at Camp....Chicken Fingers and potato wedges. Food at camp is not so bad! Some of us spent the afternoon canoeing, while some built tipis or completed the challenge course and team-building activities. We enjoyed our first bonfire last night singing catchy campfire songs along with sharing some good laughs. Bedtime went smoothly, just a few extra goodnight hugs :) But teachers were greeted with lots of smiles at breakfast in the morning. We are all out exploring today taking part in various activities around Camp. Tomorrow is our hiking day! Check out some of the memories we are making at camp! You will see more photos/videos in an iMovie at Farewell. Sorry, you won't see a lot of smiling faces due to this being a public blog. *Teachers have access to limited wifi and are outside with students for the majority of their day (8am-10pm). We may not have immediate access to e-mail. Thank you for understanding. Friday, May 24, 2019Ask me about... my Tree Cookie pin! What is my nature name? How did I decorate my tree cookie?
